Having ridden one winner on the Flat, Anthony Philip Houghton turned his attention to the jumps and added another five.
Apprenticed to Malton trainer Frank Carr, his sole success on the level came at Redcar on June 18, 1971 when the seven-year-old Palmallet came with a strong run to lead at the furlong pole and take the Bridlington Apprentice Handicap by two lengths. Of the five jockeys who finished behind him that day, only Chris Brownless had much success, and that was over jumps.
Tony had his first ride under National Hunt rules when Adorable Cyril finished eighth of 17 runners in the Cuckoo Opportunity Novices’ Hurdle at Newcastle on November 25, 1972, having been prominent early.
More than a year passed before his first win over jumps, but it was back at Newcastle that he finally scored when the 12-year-old Hassendean Burn beat five rivals to take the Sandy Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle on January 18, 1974. The pair finished second next time out, beaten a neck, but then went one better at Kelso on March 4, landing the Sprouston Selling Handicap Hurdle by ten lengths.
Tony had his first win over fences at Wetherby on November 26, 1974, when Lingus, trained by Ken Oliver, had five lengths to spare over the Chris Brownless-ridden King’s Lure at the end of the Harrogate Opportunity Handicap Chase.
Then it was back to hurdles for his first win on Timbo, trained by Frank Carr, cruising home in the Alford Selling Hurdle at Market Rasen on December 27, 1974, beating Starry Cluster by six lengths. It was the same margin of victory for the same horse when giving Tony his last success in the Tweedledum Selling Hurdle at Haydock Park on February 28, 1975. Although he continued for another couple of seasons, he had no more winners.
