Harry Haynes

Harry Haynes, born on March 23, 1989, is the son of BHA starter and former jump jockey Peter Haynes. By the time he was nine he knew he wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. He began by working at weekends and in school holidays for Hampshire John Bridger. He was cantering horses by the time he was 10 and before much longer he was riding work with the rest of the string.

By the age of 13 he was working at John Dunlop’s Sussex yard, followed the next year by Paul Nicholls’ stable in Somerset, all the time building up experience. He started riding in Arab races at 16, followed by a season riding in point-to-points. He rode his first winner for John Bridger on Mythical Charm in an amateur riders’ Flat race at Goodwood on August 13, 2005, aged 16.

He became a conditional rider based with Nicky Richards in Cumbria before joining James Ewart’s stable in the Scottish Borders. He then forged a successful partnership with trainer Malcolm Jefferson, based in Norton, Malton, North Yorkshire.

Harry scored his biggest win on Jefferson’s According To Pete in the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby in December 2011, this being followed by another win for the pair in Haydock’s Peter Marsh Chase in January 2012. In March 2012 Harry won the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham festival, riding another Jefferson-trained horse, Attaglance.

Harry rode According To Pete in the 2012 Grand National day but they were brought down at the 22nd fence. Sadly, According To Pete suffered a fractured leg and was put down at the scene.

When rides began to dry up, he had a short stint riding in America before returning to Britain. He announced his retirement from the saddle in July 2015, aged 26. He finished with 101 winners which included four on the Flat as an amateur.
