Michael Hartigan

Michael Joseph Hartigan, son of Michael Hartigan (of George Street, Limerick) was a very capable gentleman rider who, at Bangalore's 1871 meeting, won the Regimental Challenge Cup for Major Bayley as well as the Subaltern's Challenge Cup and Handicap Plate for himself.

Later, back home in Ireland, he won the Irish Grand Military, the Hunters' Grand Military, and the Gold Cup - plus innumerable races of less value.

In 1873, in England, he rode fourteen winners.

Five years earlier, he had joined the Service (Army Veterinary Department and 3rd Dragoon Guards): he retired ten years later having acquired the rank of major.

Major Michael Hartigan, born in 1849, died on 24 June, 1914 at Cavendish Square, London. His home at that time was in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. He left unsettled property of £1,766.

He was buried in Mount St Lawrence Cemetery, Limerick.
