Henry Hunt

1867 - 1929

Amateur rider Henry Hunt Jnr, son of Henry Hunt Snr, rode a total of 184 winners over jumps between 1884 and 1908, recording his greatest triumph in the Grand International Hurdle.

He rode his first winner on Little Harry in the Farmers’ Hurdle at Croxton Park on April 3, 1884. Numerically, his best year was in 1899 when he rode 28 winners, placing him fourth in the amateur riders’ table and sixth in the overall jockeys’ championship. He had just one ride in the Grand National, completing the course in eighth place on 33-1 shot Prince Tuscan in 1901.

He recorded his most important victory in March 1902 aboard 10-1 chance Peace And Plenty in the Grand International Hurdle at Gatwick. Later that month he came within a short head of a second big race triumph, finishing second on Papdale in the Liverpool Hurdle. He also finished second in that year’s National Hunt Chase, held at Warwick, riding Miss Clifden II, beaten six lengths by Marpessa, the mount of future Classic-winning trainer Atty Persse.

Henry rode his last winner on Friday, March 20, 1908 on 9-4 favourite Complete in the unimaginatively-titled Friday Selling Hurdle at Haydock Park. He rode for the final time at Nottingham on May 25, 1908, finishing seventh on Vagrant in the Clifton Handicap Hurdle.

After a long fight with cancer, Henry Hunt died on September 20, 1929.
