Philip Hide

Philip Edward Hide, son of trainer and former jockey Tony Hide, was born on June 16, 1973. Based with Findon trainer Josh Gifford, he started out as an amateur and rode his first winner on Missing Man, trained by Gifford, in the Beaumont Challenge Cup Chase for amateur riders at Fontwell Park on May 6, 1991.

Having turned professional, he won three big races: the 1994 Mackeson Gold Cup on Bradbury Star, and the 1995 Pendil Novices’ Chase and Sun Alliance Chase, both on Brief Gale. Another highlight was winning the 2001 Sussex National at Fontwell Park on 7-1 chance Lordberniebouffant. Josh Gifford trained all three horses.

He retired in 2010 after a 20-year career, with Josh Gifford and Gary Moore having been his main suppliers. His final total of winners - 413 - would have been higher but for his many injuries, which included a triple pelvis break after a fall at Cheltenham in November, 2006.

He set up as a Flat trainer and did well, before making the difficult but conscientious decision to bring his training days to a close in the summer of 2018.

Just months later, he became trainee clerk of the course at Fontwell and Brighton – two racecourses he knew extremely well from his days riding and training. He rode around 80 winners at Fontwell and trained 18 winners at Brighton. He was subsequently appointed full-time clerk of the course.
