Thomas Hale

1856 - 1889

National Hunt jockey Thomas Hale was born in 1856. He rode his first two winners on the same day at Windsor in 1876. Having started out as an amateur, he turned professional in May 1877.

He recorded his greatest success on Wrangle in the 1882 Cheltenham Grand Annual Steeplechase and enjoyed his most successful season in 1883 with 18 wins, placing him sixth in that year’s National Hunt jockeys’ championship.

He had just one ride in the Grand National ride, falling on Lang Syne in 1885.

He went on to ride around 100 winners over jumps, the last of them, Lady Frederick (4-1) in the Selling Hunters' Hurdle, at Lichfield on April 14, 1887. Later that year, on November 23, he had what was to prove his final ride at Warwick, finishing unplaced.

Thomas Hale died in Bournemouth on December 5, 1889, aged 33.
