Gabriel Hannon

Gabriel Patrick Hannon was born in Galway on October 18, 1976. His introduction to racing was through attending the Irish Racing School. From there he moved to Britain and became apprenticed to Brian Meehan. He rode his first winner on Dancing Heart (below), trained by Meehan, in a seven-furlong apprentices’ handicap at Lingfield on November 8, 1995.

Gabriel rode under both Flat and National Hunt codes and achieved over 50 winners in his riding career. He rated Tumbleweed Ridge as the best he rode, although he didn’t win on him, finishing unplaced in the valuable Tote Festival Handicap at Ascot in September 1998. That same year he rode the useful filly Emma Peel to win on her racecourse debut at Nottingham in October.

He rode his last winner on Don Pietro, trained by Roger Curtis, in a class 6 handicap at Bath on July 23, 2009. His final ride was on Jimmy Fox’s 100/1 outsider Torres Del Plume at Lingfield on November 18, 2009, finishing eighth.

He then spent two years as assistant trainer to Henry Candy followed by a further two as assistant to Jamie Osbourne, both based in Lambourn. He also served as a key member of Mikael Magnusson’s team, where he exercised and groomed future Breeders’ Cup Marathon winner London Bridge, prior to that horse joining Jo Hughes’ string.

As well as being an exercise rider, Gabriel is also a qualified equine dental technician and is now a valued member of the team at Brian O’Rourke Bloodstock Ltd, based in Lambourn.
