Alan Jeffrey Holder rode nine winners under National Hunt rules. He served his time with Bob Turnell and then with his son Andy following Bob Turnell’s death
He made an inauspicious start to his race-riding career at Newbury on March 4, 1977, falling on River Dance at the second last flight when well behind in the Wood Speen Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2).
Former jockey Derek Ancil supplied Alan with his first winner when Maytide came with a strong run on the flat to land the Welford Handicap Chase at Stratford on March 8, 1979, beating Ballinlonig by three-quarters of a length. The pair had finished second on their previous start two weeks earlier.
Alan had reason to be grateful to the versatile Laurus, trained by Andy Turnell. That horse provided him with his next three victories, one over hurdles and two over fences, including the Viscountess Petersham Trophy Handicap Chase at Devon & Exeter in August 1979.
Another good race that Alan won was the Oalo Trophy Novices’ Chase at Stratford in November 1982, when the six-year-old Bellingham benefitted from the fall two out of the long odds-on favourite Righthand Man when well clear, scoring by a length and a half. That was Alan’s penultimate winner and, like his last, was trained by Derek Ancil.
It was at Uttoxeter on December 9, 1982 that he scored for the final time when Captain Shadow held off the challenge of Lisadorn to land the Sudbury Novices’ Chase. He bowed out when Don’t be Vague was unplaced in the Pattishall Novices’ Hurdle (Division 2) at Towcester on May 27, 1983.
