John Holmes

1812 - 1861

Born on Christmas Eve, 1812, northern jockey John Holmes was apprenticed to John Scott when just nine years of age and won on his very first ride in public, Harlequin at York in May 1828.

His banner year was 1837, in which he won the Oaks on Miss Letty and the Chester Cup on General Chasse.

It was said that he never had the services of a valet throughout his career.

John Holmes died of consumption at Norton, York on March 15, 1861, aged 48. He left less than £1,000.

His twin brother, George, became a vet.
