John Hunter

1919 - 2008


John Joseph Hunter was born on June 17 1919.

He had two brothers, the twins Maurice and Fred.

John rode over the jumps from 1948 then, from 1958, trained until the 1970's.

He was in the RAF during the war.

The three brothers were part of a racing dynasty with both their father and uncle enjoying notable successes in the saddle, including the Irish St Leger.

All three brothers were apprenticed to Stanley Wootton, John from 1934 until 1939.

John's biggest success was on Blow Horn in the 1954 Welsh Grand National.

He died in Surrey in November 2008, aged 89.
