Horace Hodgkinson

(1893 - 1956)

Horace Frederick Hodgkinson was born on March 18, 1893 at Congerstone, near Market Bosworth. The son of a carter, he was more popularly known by his second Christian name.

He rode under both codes, holding a Flat jockey’s licence between 1922 and 1931, but achieved his biggest success under National Hunt rules when winning the 1932 Lancashire Chase on Huic Holloa at Manchester’s Easter Monday fixture. Among his opponents that day was Golden Miller, who earlier that month had won the first of what would be five consecutive Cheltenham Gold Cups. The ‘Miller’ started the 9/4 favourite to follow up his Gold Cup triumph but could finish only fifth.

Horace died at Witney, Oxfordshire in 1956, aged 62.
