William Roderick Hollick, better known as Bill Hollick, was born at Cuckfield in 1908.
Bill started his career on the Flat before switching to jumping. He was employed by trainer George Duller who, in his time, had been one of the most brilliant hurdles jockeys ever.
His only win on the Flat was at Pontefract on June 13, 1931, when On Approval, trained by David Dick, the father of Grand National-winning jockey Dave Dick, was successful in the Baghill Selling Handicap Plate, beating Dancing Star by a neck.
Over jumps, Bill won Sandown’s Imperial Cup in 1932 on Last of the Dandies, who he rated the best horse he’d ridden. He also won Cheltenham’s County Hurdle twice, on Jack Grange in 1934 and Celibate II in 1941.
During the War, he spent four years with 5th R.I.D.C.
