Anthony Harraway

National Hunt jockey John William Anthony Harraway – he was known by his third Christian name – was born in 1895 and rode 29 winners over jumps, achieving his greatest success in the Scottish Grand National.

He had his first ride under National Hunt rules on a horse named Battle Royal at Birmingham in a mile-and-a-half three-year-old hurdle race on November 29, 1920, finishing unplaced. It wasn’t until April 3, 1923, that he rode his first winner, on Killesher, trained by the Hon. Aubrey Hastings, in the Greenmeadow Hurdle on the second day of Cardiff’s Easter meeting,

Anthony enjoyed his best year numerically in 1925 with 14 wins, but it was in 1926 that he landed his biggest victory when winning the Scottish Grand National at Bogside on the 100-6 chance Estuna.

He had just one ride in the Grand National, that being in 1929 when a record field of 66 went to post. He partnered 200-1 outsider More Din and was among the fallers on the first circuit.

He rode his last winner at Leicester on December 8, 1936, landing the Birstall Selling Handicap Chase on Millbrook, who was bought in for 80 guineas at the post-race auction.

Millbrook was also his final mount in public when finishing unplaced in the Ferney Selling Handicap Chase at Ludlow on April 21, 1937.
