Most jockeys start their careers by riding, and perhaps winning, on the Flat before tackling the jumps, usually because of rising weight. However, Paul Eamon Hegarty won one race under National Hunt rules before switching to the Flat where he had four victories.
His first ride was at Sedgefield on September 29, 1987, when John Corbet was always behind in the Grunwick N.H. Flat Race. His sole success over obstacles came at Kelso on January 13, 1988 when Sunbis took the lead on the run-in and was ridden out to land the Grantshouse Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by a length and a half. Paul had already twice finished second on the seven-year-old that season and was destined to do so twice more before the campaign ended, but there were no more wins over jumps.
On the Flat he rode as an apprentice for trainer Barry Hills and it was on his Devine Law that he won his second race when the three-year-old quickened to land the Brecon Apprentice Stakes (Division 1) at Chepstow on September 10, 1988.
His next win was in a similar contest but this time his partner was another of Barry Hills’ three-year-olds, Poniard, who ran on to take the Whitelane Apprentice Series Final Round Up Handicap at Pontefract on October 10 by two lengths.
Paul had less than a dozen rides that season but had a few more in 1989, including his first win against senior jockeys on Child Of The Mist when beating 5lb claiming Frankie Dettori by three-quarters of a length in the Stand Stakes at Doncaster on May 29, despite his mount hanging left inside the final furlong.
His final victory was at Warwick on July 5, when Santa Tecla, the 4/1 on favourite, came home six lengths clear in the Jim Slater Apprentice Stakes. Paul kept the mount and was only beaten a neck at Thirsk later that month by Tony McGlone the Henry Cecil-trained Twin Jet. Pat Eddery then took over on Santa Tecla and Paul rode no more winners.
