James Hickey

1869-1911

National Hunt jockey James Hickey was born in Australia in 1869. He rode 22 winners in Britain between 1896 and 1899 and rode in two Grand Nationals, completing the course on the second occasion.

The best horse he rode here was a chaser named Ebor, on which he won ten races, including his first six. In 1898 he rode him to win the Sunbury Handicap Chase at Kempton in January, and the Berkshire Handicap Steeplechase at Windsor in March.

He also won eight times on Norton and finished third on him in the 1896 Grand Sefton Chase over the Liverpool fences. He rode Norton in the 1897 Grand National but was among the fallers. His second Grand National mount was Grudon, who finished seventh behind Drogheda in 1898. Grudon would go on to win the race in 1901, when partnered by Arthur Nightingall.

By the time of Grudon’s Grand National victory, James had hung up his riding boots. Norton gave him his last success as a jockey when winning the Southdown Steeplechase at Plumpton on March 9, 1899. His last ride in England was Opae, who finished unplaced in the New Century Steeplechase at Hurst Park on March 8, 1900.

James later trained Moifaa (pronounced ‘My Fay’ and derived from the Welsh for ‘swimming’) to win the 1904 Grand National.

He died at Cane Hill Asylum, aged 41, on March 29, 1911, and was buried at Epsom.
