John Harrison

John Harrison

On Friday 1 September 1865, during the annual race meeting held at Annan, Scotland, a sheepdog ran across the course and brought down Mr Lindsay’s half-bred horse Measure for Measure, ridden by a young man named John Harrison, a native of Walton, Yorkshire. Before the unfortunate jockey could get clear, the horse fell heavily upon him and, in its struggles to regain its feet, it once again fell upon the prostrate rider, this time with fatal force. The race was stopped immediately.
