Peter Hill

Peter Dennis Hill was born on August 29, 1963. Among the good horses he rode were the Barry Hills-trained High Knowl on which he won a York apprentices’ race on October 9, 1986, and Reg Hollinshead’s popular veteran Regal Steel, on which he won the Eaton Handicap at Chester’s big May meeting on May 7, 1987.

However, he is best remembered for his victory on 50-1 outsider Madraco in the 1987 Stewards’ Cup for Ripon-based trainer Peter Calver. Belying their rank outsider status in the 30-runner field, Peter made virtually all the running on Madraco, quickening two furlongs out to win one of the season’s most competitive handicaps in an almost leisurely fashion by four lengths.

The win was timely because Peter was due to complete his apprenticeship at the end of that season. Eleven days after his Stewards’ Cup triumph, he enjoyed another big day when winning the Glen International Challenge Final Handicap at Redcar on August 8.

Sadly, once Peter had lost his claim, he quickly faded from the British racing scene.
