David Hughes

David Hughes, born at Glanhaffin, Montgomeryshire, in 1837, rode mostly for his brother Thomas.

Riding under both rules, he competed in the Derby and the Grand National.

He had his best year in 1857 when riding 40 winners.

David then began training at Epsom.

In December 1868, he had an accident whilst out hunting.

His best wins included:

1856: Stewards' Cup (New Brighton)

1857: Chester Cup (Leamington)

1857: Great Metropolitan (Poodle)

1857: Queen Anne Stakes (The Early Bird)
