Nicky Howe

Nicholas John Howe was born on February 21, 1960, and lived at 6 Hawksworth Close, Grove, Wantage.

He served a seven-year apprenticeship with P. T. Walwyn and rode his first winner, Wind, at Pontefract on August 3, 1977.

An early memory as a five-pound claimer was winning the 1980 Magnet Cup at York on Sally Hall's Fine Sun. The jockey he just beat into second place was none other than Lester Piggott, riding the penalised Royal Hunt Cup winner Tender Heart.

Other good wins included the Mill Reef Stakes, Joe Coral Autumn Handicap, Great St Wilfrid Handicap, Irish Sweeps Autumn Handicap and the 1977 final of the Crown Plus Two.

Numerically, his best season came in 1978, with 25 winners.

On November 14, 1983, he married Mary William.

Nicky enjoyed a game of pool and was a keen jogger.
