Nigel John Hiskett rode for several seasons under National Hunt rules and had six wins. Based initially with leading trainer David Nicholson, he had his first ride at Taunton on January 8, 1975 when Historic Myth finished a never nearer ninth of 20 runners in the Hedgecutters Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.
It was not until Easter Monday 1977 that he first entered the winner’s enclosure when Regal Command, trained by Nicholson, took the lead two flights out and ran on strongly to land the Bilton Novices’ Hurdle at Wetherby, beating Tommy Stack on Fairy Rath by two lengths.
He drew a blank in the next two seasons but finally achieved his second success at Plumpton on November 27, 1979, when the John Spearing-trained Tudor Maestro held off the challenge of Fair Streak to take the Stanmer Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle by two lengths.
His third winner came on the Saturday of Carlisle’s 1980 Easter fixture when Suzanne’s Brandy, trained by Kevin Morgan, took the Cummersdale Opportunity Selling Handicap Hurdle, catching the long time leader Equity, the mount of Graham Bradley, to score by a length.
Morgan also provided Nigel’s third victory of the season two days later when the six-year-old Haighall landed the Norwich City Travel Handicap Hurdle at Fakenham on Easter Monday, the winning margin being six lengths. It was as much closer call the following day at Uttoxeter when getting the Keith Stone-trained Vulgan’s Gift up to take the Checkley Selling Handicap Hurdle by a short head.
Despite having ridden three winners over the Easter period, there was no breakthrough for Nigel, and it was not until November 21, 1981 that he had his next, and final, win when Brave George lived up to his name by taking the Christine’s Birthday National Hunt Flat Race at Catterick by three lengths.
He had his final ride when By The Riverside unseated him at the first fence in the Stilton Novices’ Chase at Huntingdon on Easter Monday, April 4, 1983.
