Alastair Hunter

Mr Alastair Hunter was a well-known amateur jockey of the 1940s whose opportunities in the saddle were restricted by the war.

Among the best horses he rode was Laboratoire, on which he won three times in 1940, comprising a novice hurdle at Gatwick in March, the Amateur Riders’ Handicap Hurdle at Cheltenham in April, and the County Hurdle at Taunton in November.

He scored his sole success at Cheltenham’s National Hunt meeting when winning the Lansdown Selling Hurdle in 1941 on 2/1 favourite King’s Gap.

In March 1948 he finished second on Tiberdon in Cheltenham’s four-mile National Hunt Chase. Sadly, he died the following month as the result of an accident in a schooling gallop at Wanborough, Wiltshire. He was riding a horse trained by Tom Yates over fences. The horse fell and kicked Mr Hunter on the head.
