John Hill

John Hill

John Ernest Hill was based with Wilmington, Polegate trainer John Hooton, who supplied him with all four of his winning rides over hurdles. His career spanned four seasons in the late 1960s/early 70s when he was Hooton’s claiming rider and understudy to stable jockey Joe Guest.

He had the first of his four wins at Plumpton on Easter Monday, April 7, 1969, when Cloghanelly won the Easter Four-Year-Old Hurdle, beating Bavard, ridden by David Moore.

His second win did not come until February 6, 1970, when Mahatma beat 24 rivals to win the February Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown Park by eight lengths. After finishing third at Kempton Park on February 27, Mahatma came out again three days later to win the Swanley Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) at Wye, John bringing him home three lengths clear of David Mould on Prince Tacitus, having led from the halfway point.

Another gap ensued before a fourth and final victory at Lingfield Park on December 11, 1970, when driving the four-year-old Saint Accord ahead on the run-in to win the Limpsfield Handicap Hurdle by half a length. John shared the rides on Saint Accord with Joe Guest for the remainder of the campaign, however, they were unable to land another win.
