Michael Haynes

1931 - 2008



Born in Fulham, London on July 1, 1931, Michael John Haynes was the last apprentice signed by Stanley Wootton.

Between 1946 and 1959 he was a flat and National Hunt jockey, and it was at Sandown in 1955 that he gained his greatest success when winning the Imperial Cup for Wootton on Bon Mot II.

He rode over 100 winners before taking out a trainer's licence in 1974. His first winner was

Some Jewel at Windsor 21 July 1975. His two best horses were Popsi's Joy, winner of the 1980 Cesarewitch and Vorvados on which Lester Piggott excelled.

Popsi's Joy almost died as a three-year-old after contracting tetanus but recovered to win eight handicaps two years later.

Michael died in Epsom on May 27, 2008, aged 76.
