George Herring

Herring learned his riding skills on Braham Moor under the watchful eye of trainer ‘Blackjack’ John Lowther. He rode the grey mare Hollandaise to win the 1778 St Leger for Sir Thomas Gascoigne.

Herring was killed at the old Hull racecourse on 27th July 1796. He was twice thrown from an agitated black filly called Gypsy. On his third attempt he was again unseated, this time with fatal consequences.

George Herring once rode nineteen consecutive winners which is still a world record.
