Tom Hulme was born at Stansted Abbots, Herts., and rode over jumps before WW1: he took up training after it.
He rode successfully in several countries and could speak French, Italian & German.
His father, then aged 12, was the first apprentice ever to be taken on by trainer Tom Wadlow.
Tom had a son: Tom Lionel Hulme, who was born on January 16, 1916. Tom Jr. died in December, 1984.
Tom Sr. died in Chester on June 17, 1945. He left £335.
