Lee Howard rode over jumps for three seasons in the 1970s but managed only one win. Associated with the Saxon House stable of the legendary Fulke Walwyn, his first ride was at Huntingdon on December 4, 1973, when Klonk finished fifth out of 15 runners in the Bedford Opportunity Handicap Hurdle.
It was at Taunton on April 25, 1974 on going described as ‘hard’ that he had his only success when Cortado, trained by Fulke Walwyn, came with a strong run to take the lead on the flat and win the Yarcombe Novices’ Hurdle (Division 1) by half a length. It was Lee’s fourth ride on the four-year-old and they had finished second on their previous start at Cheltenham eight days earlier. The pair had one more unplaced outing before the season ended.
He came within a length and a half of a second win when runner-up on Greystoke Pillar in the Lucky Dip Opportunity Hurdle at Stratford on New Year's Eve 1974, but that was as close as he came to doubling his score.
Lee continued until having his final ride at Fontwell Park on December 30, 1975, when David City finished tailed off in the Brighton Novices’ Handicap Hurdle.
