Tony Hide

Anthony Gatehouse Hide, the brother of jockey Edward Hide, was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, on May 13, 1939.

He rode professionally between 1954 and 1968, serving his apprenticeship under his father.

He was very much under his brother's long shadow and found success hard to come by. His best win was probably on King's Gap in the 1959 Thirsk Gold Cup.

He quit riding and became assistant trainer; first, to his father, then to Peter Nelson and, lastly, to Bruce Hobbs.

In 1973 he moved to Italy to become private trainer to Razza Oligiata with much success including the 1974 Italian 2,000 Guineas (Mannsfeld).

He returned to England in 1977 but, as trainer, endured a barren 5 years.

Tony's son, Philip Hide, rode over the jumps for Josh Gifford.
