Steven Hives

Steven Hives was a successful Flat apprentice who subsequently rode over hurdles in the 1970s. He was born in Malton, Yorkshire in 1956 and served his apprenticeship with Willie Stephenson at Royston. He rode his first winner on Stephenson’s Faithful Mata in a Thirsk apprentices’ race on Friday, April 13, 1973. He won another such race on him later that season at Yarmouth on September 20.

Steven rode eight winners in 1974, all on Stephenson’s horses, including four apprentice races on Barsheba plus two handicaps and a Doncaster claimer on the sprinter Tanaria.

Having ridden a total of 16 winners on the Flat, Steven turned his attentions to the National Hunt discipline. Still based with Willie Stephenson, he made a bright beginning to his new career, riding nine winners in the 1976/77 season.

The first of those was gained on Stephenson’s handicap hurdler Shesheen at Southwell on September 6, 1976. They followed up at Warwick twelve days later. He remained with Stephenson the following season when his wins included Boardman’s Special at Towcester on November 24, 1977.

Sadly, he was unable to maintain that encouraging start, his last winning season being in 1978/79, by which time he was riding for Doncaster trainer John Bingham. Steven tasted victory just twice that term, namely on Captain Bing at Wetherby on November 25 and on Triole at Worcester on December 13, 1978.
