Paul Harley rode winners over jumps for several seasons in the late 1980s and early 1990s, amassing 22 victories altogether, with a best score of seven in 1992/93.
He started out as a conditional jockey with Terry Casey and had his first ride at Newbury on January 2, 1987, when Miss Felthem was pulled up in the Abingdon Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle.
It was nearly a year before his first success which came at Southwell on December 4 when Caffieri took the lead on the flat and ran on under pressure to take the Curlew Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle by two lengths. Fifteen days later they followed up at Bangor.
Over the next few seasons Paul had the occasional winner as well as enduring some lean spells. Undoubtedly the best horse he rode to victory was Remittance Man, trained by Nicky Henderson, who won his second race over hurdles with Paul aboard at Doncaster in February 1990. Remittance Man went on to win numerous top-class chases including the 1992 Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham.
Paul also won three races on the hurdler Hilltown Blues during the 1992/93 season.
His final win was at Catterick on January 21, 1984, when Kilgariff, trained by Richard Fahey, came through to lead in the last 100 yards and take the Leyburn Handicap Hurdle by two and a half lengths. Paul had two more rides on the eight-year-old, the second of which saw him finish third in the Hamlet Cigars Gold Card Handicap Hurdle Final at the Cheltenham on March 15, 1994.
