Matthew Henry

Flat jockey Matthew Philip Henry was born on May 22, 1975. He was apprenticed to John Hills at Lambourn and rode his first winner on Perdition, trained by Hills, at Salisbury on July 9, 1994.

He achieved a notable victory while still a 5lb claimer, winning the William Hill Silver Cup at Goodwood aboard Silver Groom for Epsom trainer Reg Akehurst on July 25, 1995.

He rode 23 winners in 1997. The two best horses he rode that year were Docksider, whom he rode to win a Salisbury maiden on July 12, and Golden Fortune, on whom he won the Jersey Lily Fillies’ Nursey at Newmarket on September 30. He achieved a career best score of 37 winners in 2000.

The fastest horse he rode was John Cullinan’s sprinter Smokin Beau. Matthew won five races on him including, in 2001, the Hong Kong Jockey Club Sprint at Ascot on July 29, and Doncaster’s Portland Handicap on September 12. They also finished a close third in that year’s Ayr Gold Cup and were beaten just a short head by Kyllachy in the following year’s Group 3 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket.

Matthew rode 27 winners in 2002 but his seasonal tallies began to decline thereafter. He had one more good season in 2006 with a score of 16 but rode just two winners in each of the next two seasons. His last two wins in Britain came on the Michael Jarvis-trained Grand Strategy in a Kempton maiden on January 5 and a Wolverhampton class 4 handicap on January 31, 2008.

He had his final mount in Britain at Kempton on September 1, 2008, finishing last of 13 on a 50/1 outsider named Ofaraby, trained by Michael Jarvis.

He finished his race riding career in the UAE, his last ride there being on Power Politics, who finished tenth at Jebal Ali on December 30, 2011.
