A. (Richard) Hartley

The jockey listed as ‘A. Hartley’ was actually known as Richard Hartley. He was born in Deansgate, Manchester, and served his apprenticeship with Tom Jennings at Newmarket. He achieved a famous double on Plaisanterie when winning both the Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch on him in 1885.

Soon after that he went to France and effectively spent the rest of his career riding abroad. He was champion jockey in France in 1891 and twice won the Prix du Jockey Club (French Derby) in 1886 (dead-heated) and 1887. He rode in Russia in 1894 before returning to France, where he rode until the early 1900s. He died in 1918.
