Freddie Head

A six-time winner of the French jockey's championship, Freddie Head was born on June 19, 1947 in Neuilly, France. Known also as ‘Freddie’, his grandfather, Willie Head was a jockey and trainer who saddled Le Paillon to win the 1947 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Freddie’s father, Alec Head, was also a jockey and had ridden Le Paillon to win the 1947 Grand Course de Haies at Auteuil and finish second to National Spirit in that year’s Champion Hurdle. Alec subsequently became a successful and owner based at Haras du Quesney, near Deauville.

Freddie won all France’s big races during a glittering career spanning more than 30 years, gaining his first major victory on Bon Mot in the 1966 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. He went on to win that race on four occasions including on a horse trained by his father (Ivanjica) in 1976 and one trained by his sister, Christiane ‘Criquette’ Head (Three Troikas) in 1979.

He won all the French classics multiple times: the Poule d’Essai des Poulains six times, Poule d’Essai des Pouliches eight times, Prix du Jockey Club four times, Prix de Diane four times, and Prix Royal Oak six times. Two of his earliest big race triumphs came in successive renewals of the Grand Prix de Paris in 1968 and 1969.

Freddie also scored several Group 1 victories in Britain including the 2,000 Guineas on Zino in 1982 and the 1,000 Guineas twice on Ma Biche in 1983 and Miesque in 1987. In America, he rode Miesque to land back-to-back triumphs in the 1987 and 1988 Breeders’ Cup Mile.

His sole Classic winner in Ireland was King’s Company in the 1971 Irish 2,000 Guineas. His other major victories abroad included Canada’s E. P. Taylor Stakes, Germany’s Grosser Preis von Berlin, and Italy’s Gran Premio del Jockey Club and Grand Premio di Milano.

Freddie retired as a jockey in 1997 and began training. In 2008, he became the first man ever to win Breeders’ Cup races as both a jockey and trainer when Goldikova won the first of her three successive renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Mile.
