Paul Hamblett

Flat jockey Paul Anthony Hamblett was born on October 2, 1954 and served his apprenticeship with Doug Smith at Newmarket. However, he spent the vast majority of his career in Scandinavia, mostly based in Norway, where he rode almost 400 winners.

He returned to Britain in 1981 but found it hard to get established. He finally made his mark when Al Bashaama gave him the most important success of his career in the valuable Tote Dual Forecast Handicap at Haydock on May 24, 1986.

The best horse he rode was the Rae Guest-trained filly Aldbourne, on whom he finished third in the English One Thousand Guineas and second in the Irish One Thousand Guineas in 1989. He announced his retirement at the end of that year, aged 34, having ridden a total of 410 winners in nine countries.

He took up the position of racing manager for Brian Long, who then had 15 horses in training in Newmarket with Rae Guest and Lord John Fitzgerald.
