Percy Hinchcliffe

1916-1991

Born in 1916, northern National Hunt jockey Percy Hinchcliffe was based with Tadcaster, near Weatherby, trainer Tom Hall and remained with the Hall family throughout his career, which was interrupted by World War Two. He rode his first winner in 1936 and his last in 1953, adding 11 more in between, with a best total of four in the 1950/51 season.

His first success came at Catterick Bridge on March 14, 1936, when he steered Tremolator to victory in the Scotton Chase. With five of the eight-strong field falling, Tremolator won comfortably by a distance. Percy and Tremolator then finished second twice but were unable to repeat their success.

Thereafter, Percy had to settle for the occasional winner. Probably the best horse he rode was Lockerbie, owned by Harry Lane and trained by Harry Kitching. Percy rode him to win the Hill Top Maiden Chase on the Saturday of Hexham’s 1947 Whitsun Bank Holiday fixture. When trained subsequently by Neville Crump, Lockerbie won several good chases and finished fourth in the 1951 Cheltenham Gold Cup, having been right in contention jumping the final fence.

Following the death of Tom Hall, his younger brother Charlie took over at Tadcaster and remained there until his retirement in 1975. He provided Percy with all four of his wins in the 1950/51 season, all of them in novice chases, none of which was worth more than £102 to the winner.

His final victory was at Southwell on October 15, 1953, when Wishbone, trained by Charlie Hall, won the Oxton Selling Handicap Hurdle, a race for jockeys who had not ridden 14 winners in their career. Percy just qualified, having amassed a total of 12. Running for the first time that season, Wishbone won by six lengths. Alas, Percy never rode him again and only renewed his licence for one more season.
