John Hughes rode eight winners under National Hunt rules in the mid-1970s. He had the good fortune to be associated with the stable of top trainer David Nicholson and had his first ride at Warwick on December 5, 1972, when Scupper was ninth of eleven finishers in the Hampton Novices’ Hurdle (Division 3, Part 1).
Local trainer John Spearing provided him with his first winner when Glendale quickened on the flat to beat Stansfield by two and a half lengths in the Hagley Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Worcester on March 6, 1973.
That was John’s only winner of the season but he fared better in the 1973/74 with six victories, including one for David Nicholson and one for his father Frenchie.
John’s final success was his second on Two For Joy, trained by Pat Rohan, winning comfortably by eight lengths in the Barrow Opportunity Handicap Hurdle at Cartmel on Bank Holiday Monday, August 26, 1974. He had his last ride two months later when Adam’s Brake made little show in the Fenns Bank Novices’ Hurdle at Bangor-on-Dee on 19 October.
