Her first success was at Wetherby on October 28, 1983, when Green Dolphin led at the last and was all out to beat Gold Shoveler by a length and a half in the Boston Spa Handicap Chase for amateur riders. The runner-up was ridden by Ronnie Beggan, later to do well in the professional ranks.

She finished last on her first ride as a professional on Golden Leicester for trainer Percy Wigham at Doncaster on February 25, 1984, but at Cartmel on Whit Monday, May 28, she had her second win when Chi Mai beat two rivals in the Willall Homes Hurdle. The odds-on favourite Footwork ran out after the fourth flight when leading, and Susan’s mount went clear to win by a distance.
