He had his first success at the Quorn Hunt meeting at Loughborough on April 25, 1927, when riding Saon to victory in the Farmer’s Hurdle by a length and a half. He took out a licence to train for the 1929/30 season and it is likely that most of his wins thereafter were on horses he trained himself.

He enjoyed a good last season as an amateur, winning three races on Sanbra and four on Sanstrome, although one of the latter’s was on a technicality. This happened at Towcester on Easter Monday 1930, when the five-year-old finished second in the Novices’ Hurdle, beaten a head by Nat Dixon on Rock Bottom. The stewards objected to the winner on the grounds that he was not qualified to run, due to the non-registration of partnership. Sanstrome was duly promoted to first place.

Having turned professional in the autumn of 1930, he had his first win in the paid ranks on 6-1 chance Battle Array in the Open Selling Handicap Hurdle at Huntingdon on Whit Monday, May 25, 1931. Only once did he ride more than one winner in a season, when managing two in two days on Refbra in May 1937.

His last two victories were gained at Uttoxeter on the four-year-old Decorated, the second of which was in the Brook Furlong Handicap Hurdle on October 11, 1938. He rode Decorated six more times that season but the best they managed was one second-place finish. He did not retain his licence after that 1938/39 season.
