Francis Holyoake

c1829 - 1897

Amateur rider Captain Francis Edward Holyoake rode 51 winners over jumps between 1862 and 1876, recording his greatest triumph in the 1872 National Hunt Chase. Numerically, his most successful years were 1869 and 1873, riding nine winners in each.

Captain Holyoake rode his first winner on April 14, 1862 aboard Mr Wadlow’s mare Susan Clayton in the Albrighton Hunt Steeplechase for gentleman riders, over about three miles at the Albrighton Hunt Steeplechase meeting. According to the description, the race rook place “over some fields about two miles distant from Shiffnal” (sic).

The newspaper report stated that “the day was miserable, rain falling during the greater part of the afternoon, and a cold wind blowing”. The report concluded: “it should be mentioned that many of the horses did not run in the names of their real owners, but most of them were recognised by the principal visitors to the course, in consequence of their having appeared in the hunting field”.

Captain Holyoake registered the highlight of his race-riding career when winning the 1872 National Hunt Chase, held that year at Abergavenny, on Red Nob – a name unlikely to be accepted by Weatherbys today – the 3-1 joint favourite. Captain Holyoake also finished third in the 1873 renewal, run on that occasion at Bristol, on Patch.

His final victory came at Knighton on April 7, 1876, in a Match over three miles for £50, each horse carrying 12st 7lbs, riding Mr C. B. Childe Pemberton’s Arrogance against Mr E. S. Lucas’s Yellowhammer, ridden by Mr Waylands. Captain Holyoake rode for the last time at Four Oaks Park on June 6, 1881, finishing third.
