Article by Alan Trout

Born on May 11, 1893, Herbert Joseph Haddrell rode eleven winners over jumps in the 1920s. His first ride was at Hawthorn Hill on November 11, 1922, when Sans Peche, having her first race, finished third of sixteen in the Three-Year-Old Hurdle.

He rode his first winner at Pershore on May 8, 1923, when his mount Boyne Water won the Pensham Selling Handicap Hurdle, having two lengths to spare at the finish over Lusiad, ridden by the reigning champion jockey Jack Anthony.

Over the next few seasons, Herbert rode the occasional winner and plenty of also-rans. Four of his eleven wins were gained at Pershore, including one on May 4, 1925, when riding Chain Hill to beat Kilbrain, ridden by future champion jockey Ted Leader, with Master Of Arts, partnered by Jack Anthony in third place. He also had a ride in the 1925 Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree, finishing seventh on Desert Rose.

His final victory was achieved at Pershore, the Worcestershire venue where he won his first race, on May 8, 1928, when the four-year-old Part Two beat three rivals to land the Croome Moderate Handicap Hurdle. He continued in the saddle until having his final ride on Tetripit, who finished unplaced in the Chorlton Handicap Hurdle at Manchester on January 2, 1931.
