Charles Hardcastle

Charles Hardcastle was born in Manchester circa 1845. He was apprenticed to the brothers George and William Oates at Middleham. He moved south with George Oates and achieved his biggest victory in the 1862 Ebor Handicap on Makeshift. At the time, the mare had not been named.

He left Oates in the summer of 1863 to ride for John Prince, who trained nearby.

He then went to France and rode there for several more years.
