Charles Hogan

1870 - 1911

Charles Hogan - affectionately known as 'Madcap' Hogan - was born at Regent Road, Salford, on September 26, 1870.

Christened John, he changed his name to Charles as there was already a jockey called John Hogan riding.

Having served his apprenticeship in Ireland he enjoyed a successful, if short, career.

He won the 1901 Lancashire Chase on Caragh Hill, the 1894 Valentine Chase on Cathal & the 1898 Liverpool Hurdle on Priestholme.

He was Champion jumps jockey in Ireland in 1895 with 31 winners.

Sadly, Charles was left paralysed on one side after a fall at Roscommon on July 25, 1901.

He died in Kildare. Ireland, in June 1911, aged 40.
