Michael ‘Kipper’ Herrington was born in Knaresborough, North Yorkshire, but did not come from a racing family. Instead, he grew up being a keen cricketer and sportsman, representing Yorkshire at cricket until the age of 15. When he left school at 16 weighing only six stone he went to the British Racing School in Newmarket despite never having even sat on a horse.
His first job was as an apprentice with Richard Whitaker, where he had a few rides on the Flat, followed by riding as a conditional for Mary Reveley in the 1990s. He rode his first winner at Carlisle on March 11, 1993, when Snuffle Babe took the lead two furlongs from home and ran on strongly to beat Royal Garden by three and a half lengths in the Liddel Water N.H. Flat Race. He enjoyed a second success that season when another of Mrs Reveley’s charges, Manettia, took the Levy Board N.H. Flat Race at Carlisle on Easter Monday by three lengths.
There was then a gap of almost two years before Michael achieved his third success, but at Newcastle on March 20, 1995 he rode Miss Optimist to win the Wessex Taverns Conditional Stakes N.H. Flat Race by three lengths.
His first victory over obstacles came at Catterick on November 29, 1995, when Desert Fighter recorded a comfortable victory in the Brompton Conditional Jockeys’ Handicap Hurdle, coming home 12 lengths clear of Able Player.
Another long gap, over two years, then ensued before a final success, when Mr Busby, trained like his other winners by Mrs Reveley, was driven out to take the Shoveler Standard Open N.H. Flat Race at Newcastle on January 17, 1998 by three and a half lengths. He kept the ride for one more start but did not renew his licence the following season, having won five races, four of them in bumpers.
Michael went on to gain his HGV licence and work as travelling head lad for David Nicholls, which included travelling to Hong Kong and Sweden with Group horses. He was then travelling head lad followed by assistant trainer for Kevin Ryan.
He took out his own trainer’s licence in 2009, based in Thirsk. He subsequently moved to Mount House Stables at Willoughton, near Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, a 30-box yard with facilities including a private seven-furlong cushion track gallop, a six-horse walker with a rubber floor, an indoor one-furlong woodchip ride, horse weighing scales and an all-weather lunge area.
