Oliver Hogg

Oliver Hogg held a National Hunt jockey’s licence between 1962 and 1969. He rode just three winners but was arguably unlucky not to have ridden more.

On the eve of the 1963 Cheltenham National Hunt meeting, Monday, March 11, Oliver gained his first success on 100/8 shot Clane Beau for Northumberland owner-trainer Freddie Milburn in the two-mile Dunkirk Handicap Chase at Southwell, beating Terry Biddlecombe on the 6/4 favourite Little Oracle by a neck. It was his sole success from 22 rides that season.

He joined Penrith trainer Tommy Robson and rode his second winner on Robson’s selling hurdler Miss Maben at Catterick on Saturday, November 7, 1964. Attempting a follow up at Sedgefield two weeks later, the partnership was in contention when falling at the sixth flight. However, they made amends next time out by winning the Willows Selling Handicap Hurdle at Haydock on Saturday, January 9, 1965.

Having had only two other rides all that season, Oliver moved south to further his career and took over from recently retired Tony Pipe as head lad cum stable jockey to Bedfordshire permit trainer Sidney Banks. Banks’ two best horses were Scarab and Piranha. Oliver went close on both horses on several occasions.

During the 1965/66 campaign he finished third on Scarab over hurdles at Huntingdon in October, then finished second on him over fences at Folkestone in April. However, Michael Scudamore was in the saddle when he won a Uttoxeter novices’ chase in May. That same season he rode Piranha eight times, in four hurdle races and four chases, and was only once out of the frame, finishing second five times

It was a similar story the following season. He finished a close third in a chase at Market Rasen on Scarab (that was the horse’s final race). Piranha ran just twice that season: Oliver finished fifth on him over hurdles at Fontwell in August but was replaced by Jeff King seven days later when he won a Huntingdon novices’ chase.

Oliver’s few rides thereafter included Sidney Banks’ novice hurdler Devon Twist, whom he rode four times in the 1967/68 season, ending up on the deck on the last two occasions. He rode Devon Twist five times the following season, finishing a respectable fourth in a big field at Huntingdon first time out. The final occasion was when finishing unplaced in a 26-runner novices’ hurdle at Leicester on November 25, 1968.

That appears to have been his final race ride. His name appeared in the Sporting Chronicle against that of Devon Twist at Huntingdon on Boxing Day but the horse was a non-runner. David Patrick took over from then on and rode Devon Twist to win at Wye and Plumpton later that season. Although Oliver held a licence for the 1968/69 campaign, he does not seem to have had any mounts.

Oliver Hogg’s winners were, in chronological order:

1. Clane Beau, Southwell, March 11, 1963

2. Miss Maben, Catterick Bridge, November 7, 1964

3. Miss Maben Haydock Park, January 9, 1965
