scratchboard

For this project we were asked to copy a photo onto a scratch-board, we were told to pick a photo that we took of anything. From a  dog to a sunset. Then when we found that photo, we had to edit into grayscale so that you could clearly see what was dark, what was light, and what was in the middle. Personally, I don't really have that many photos on my phone, so I just took a photo of something in the art room. And that happened to be a tissue-box. We used a scratch-board and a spade-like metal tool to scrape away the black coating. I had never really done anything with a scratch-board other than those books in a toy store that had a picture and you had to try and copy the picture onto the page next to it. At first it was difficult imagining where and how I would start but it got easier the more I scratched.

I used Line, Shape and value to create the tissue box and to create balance and contrast between the actual tissue and the box itself. For the tissue I curved the line where it was curved on the paper, and for the box I just used straight lines.

The story for this piece is that I didn’t have any photos so I took something random to photograph. I think the best thing about this piece is the tissue itself, and the worst is most noticeably the words on the box.
