clay, encaustics
7x4.5"
I created this piece based on my investigation question, but this time instead of having my idea be the main focus point I put my thought into a new material. But generally, the idea is the difference between my bubbly/round objects and my hard/spiky objects. I decided to use clay to make an encaustic tile with layers of depth and textural elements. The difference between lights and darks was a focus point as well for this piece, I wanted a distinct difference between each element.
I started with a sketch like usual, but I started quickly on the tile because I knew it would take a long to dry to my likeness and to be able to start carving. I wanted to distinguish between what was important and what wasn't by using encaustics in the carved-out spikes, giving them a little more emphasis than the rest of the white-lined objects.
I used clay because I wanted to show the weight of the spikes and their effect on the bubbly objects. Because clay gets pretty heavy after putting many layers on. And I wanted to emphasize the spikes with an outline vs the bubbly objects not having one.
