east winds
cut paper, colored paper, watercolor, and gouache
10x7"
I created this piece based on the idea of wind, and how that might affect an object. How fragile is my object, or how strong is the wind? I had a lot of questions in mind about how the viewer would react. When I think of wind, a lot of the time I think of things being taken away, like loose leaves or paper.
I started with many sketches in a sketchbook. I knew what I wanted to do in my head but it was hard getting it out on paper in a way that I liked. Next, I worked on the cut paper for the landscape, painted it, then taped off the edges and vertically held the piece so that the watercolors would fall in the way I wanted. Lastly, I added my object on top, giving it one more layer of depth.
I used cut paper because, as I said earlier when I think of wind I think of loose leaves/paper being taken up. I realized after my sketches that this idea is very similar to a scene from Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron, where loose paper flyes against the boy's face. I guess I was subconsciously inspired.
