For this assignment we were asked to carve out a self portrait on a block, to then put ink on and print on a piece of paper. We had to create 4 prints, one on a white piece of paper with black ink, one where we could do whatever we wanted. another where you had create a "background" for the print. And finally, one where you needed to draw/color, or paint (or all three) ove the black and white print. We used carving tools, a block to carve on, paper and black ink (+different colors). First I drew out the self portrait on the block, then I carved out the white/grey areas. After I covered the carved block with paint then firmly printed it on a piece of paper.
I used color, shape and form to create these pieces. I think this will create balance and contrast at the same time. For the color, I used black and blues. shape was very important because of how hard it is to carve these blocks out to create the right lines and curves.
The best thing I did was probably the piece where I had to put an alternate background. I didn't cover the whole background and only used one square for the face, I think it looks abstract and I like it. The thing I wasn't very good at was the printing part, I never could get the print to be completely spotless free.
