teapot design

capypoura

ceramic, underglaze, translucent glaze

This piece was based on the assignment to create a teapot design and sculpt it. I originally wanted to make a snail pot, and I had a whole 4 view sketch of it, but then I thought of a capybara and that spiked my curiosity much more than a snail. I wanted the water to come out of his nose because that's a big part of Capybara's identity, and I thought it would be funny.

I started with a sketch, and then pretty much immediately started sculpting a coil sphere. After the sphere was done (I kept it very wet) I added on and pushed in the back for the handle to feel better, and then glazed. I wanted to get the colors I wanted, so I decided to use underglaze, with a clear shiny glaze overtop.

I wish the colors came out just a little on the lighter, more pastel side, but it was also my first time using clear glaze (which tends to make things a tad darker). But overall It's one of my favorite pieces that I've made, I love the lily pad and how I made the inside of the pot a different color.
