investigation #15

the elders

When I first started this piece, my initial thought was fear. But it changed as I went on, and the emotion behind the artwork ended up turning into deja vu and/or reunion. It started as a jungle-themed piece, which in my mind gave me a sense of excitement, but also fear. Mostly fear of the unknown, because jungles are unpredictable. But the goblins/monsters/whatever they are seemed less scary as I created the piece.

It started out as an alcohol marker+fine-liner piece for a previous investigation, but I didn't want to continue with it. But I still really liked the idea so I continued it on digital, where I started with my original sketch on a layer under so I could outline it, then I just colored.

Once it turned into a "happy" piece, I realized it reminded me of a reunion of sorts. The big old slab of rock represents the history of the family, as it spans back many years. And to me, the cherry blossoms not only remind me of family for some reason, but they also represent the Family Tree. I purposefully entangled the trees in between the goblins/monsters/whatever they are to give the sense they are connected.
