For this piece we were told to create a background for our self portraits; first we were told to research a specific artist, then we had to create a background based on the artist we chose. We were told that we could use anything we wanted (as long as it fit the artist), I used watercolor, and pencil (for a sketch). I chose cubism (Pablo Picasso) so my first idea was to make a table with a lamp in the background and maybe some other paintings. But then I realized that the lamp would be the main piece and I wouldn’t be able to fit in so I chose to be inspired by a piece he already made.
Shape and color were the biggest things in this piece; shape because well, I was creating cubism so shape was a must. For color, I used the same colors as in one of his pieces (for the left side). Since there were two sides to the background, I think these two Elements created contrast, as one side is dark and the other side is light.
Personally I am not very proud of this piece, it was out of my comfort zone. The shapes are messy, which sometimes is Picasso’s style but I don't think it fits in this situation. There's not much that I do like with this piece, but I like some of the colors fading into each other on the left side of the paper. Overall, I think I did okay.
